Some of you may remember when J and I updated and made over our kitchen, about this time last year.  Well, we’ve done a continuation of that makeover by adding some more cabinets and counter top.  And I’ve finally found a way to organize my spices! 🙂

I mentioned our continuing kitchen makeover here.  Well, now it’s finished!

We put in new hanging cabinets as well as new floor cabinets, which means more counter space! 🙂  I love the additional workspace.  It makes cooking so much easier!

As I said in the previous post, the cabinets weren’t an exact match to the ones we currently have.  But now that they are done, you would never know!

The other thing that is different… the counter top.  When we initially purchased our counter tops, we purchased them at Home Depot.  These were the basic, laminate counter tops that they sell.  Well.. when we when to get the counter top this time around, we found out they no longer have the same style that we have!  Luckily, Lowe’s sells a very, very similar style that we ended up purchasing.  If you don’t know they are different, it’s something you’d never notice.  So it worked out well.

You’ll notice that our microwave cart is still there.  We were both hoping we would be able to get rid of it, but we have SO MUCH STUFF!  Maybe someday we’ll go through and try to re-organize, or possibly get rid of some stuff, but for now, it stays.  We just need the space.

While we made over our kitchen, I made over our spice cabinet!  I’ve been on the lookout for years now for some sort of spice rack that doesn’t take up counter space, or hang on the wall.  We just don’t have the space for those.  I finally found this.

I ordered one, without realizing how many spices we actually have, and quickly filled it.

You see that top shelf?  That’s what my spice cabinet used to look like.  It took me forever to find what I was looking for, and usually 2 or 3 of them ended up on the floor in the process.

I ordered another one of these spice racks.  Now they are so easy to find!  I placed them all in alphabetical order and it takes me all of 30 seconds to find what I need.

I am so excited that all of our kitchen plans are finally done!  Now on to our next project! 🙂

It’s finally (basically) DONE!!  I’m so excited that I have my kitchen back.  We still have some things in the dining room that we need to put away.  And we need to do some paint touchups, put on the cabinet knobs, the tiles for the backsplash, buy window treatments, and hook up the new garbage disposal to the electricity (this will be so nice to have).

I really love how it turned out.  Check out the last 2 posts to see before and ‘during the process‘ pictures.

Last week I posted that we were going to be making over our kitchen.  I am so relieved that I can finally say that the painting is all done!!  J spent a whole day last week painting the walls, then we painted all weekend and after work on Monday and Tuesday.  (We painted the trim a different color and hated it, which is why it went into Monday and Tuesday.)

We decided to go with Venetian Stucco (that’s the color, not actually stucco) on the walls, and Walnut Bark on the cabinets – both Glidden brand colors.

We’re working on getting the hardware on the cabinets and drawers so we can put those back on the cabinets.

Friday J is off work, so he’ll be putting in the new floor.  I’m really, really hoping we can get everything done by Sunday.  We still have to put in the new cabinets and sink, new disposal.  At some point we really need to get window treatments, but I doubt we get to that this week. We also have a new ceiling fan to install.  And then we need to get everything back into the kitchen – which will be a chore!  I didn’t realize how much stuff we had in there until we had to take it all out.  We’ll definitely be doing a bit of downsizing. 🙂

Not having a kitchen (at least not one that’s actually put together) is driving me nuts!!  Our dining makes me cringe just thinking about.  I feel like it takes me at least twice as long to do anything because I have to go from the entryway (where the fridge is), to the dining, to the kitchen – and back and forth and back and forth.

3 more days… 3 more days…

J and I have been talking for quite a long time about redoing our kitchen.  It’s so GREEN as it is now.  I absolutely hate it.  We are finally getting started on this project and I’m so excited to see the finished product. 🙂

We started this weekend by taking everything out of the kitchen.  (And, I have to say, I can’t wait until it’s put back together.) We’re doing everything as inexpensively as possible, but it will still be a very big change when we’re through, because just about everything will be different.  We’ve already started by putting in a new exterior door – the old one was white, and was pretty beat up. We plan to keep everything pretty neutral for resale, whenever that may be.

This empty corner held a hutch we bought at Target, and a microwave cart.  We are going to try to find cabinets that match the ones we have, and we’ll put in new cabinets (top and bottom) in that corner.

This is our dining room right now.  We moved everything into here, except for our refrigerator, which is currently sitting in our entryway.  It definitely takes about twice as long to make anything now, with going back and forth between 3 rooms, and digging through the dining room to find what we need.

Here is what we plan to do:

  • Paint the walls and cabinets (hopefully to be completed on Sunday)
  • New floor (we’re doing laminate wood)
  • New countertops
  • New cabinets in the corner by the window
  • New hardware
  • New ceiling fan
  • New kitchen sink
  • Repaint the ceiling white
  • And, finally, new window treatments

Hopefully I’ll be able to post pictures next week of the new wall and cabinet colors! 🙂
